Finding accommodation is a real headache for a good number of students and their parents. The idea of sifting through little adverts and linking visits together, more than one of these things are discouraged even before they begin. A little overview of the solutions and the one which will make the student and their parents happy.   

1. Estate agencies  

Impossible not to think about the estate agency option when you are looking for accommodation, an often-expensive solution.

  • Sometimes a lot of applicants 
  • Consequent application fees  
  •  Demanding conditions for access 

2. Private owners 

 Many private owners allow you to rent their property directly, without going through an intermediary. A solution which can prove to be a good compromise.

  • Multiple contact channels 
  • Eligible for APL  
  • No additional fees

Disadvantages   

  • Sometimes a lot of applicants 
  • Variable conditions for access, depending on the owner 
  •  Be wary of the scam risk

 3. CROUS university halls

There are several dozen CROUS university halls in the largest student cities. They are managed by the Student Public Service, CROUS, and they guarantee low rent.

 Advantages  

  • The cheapest rent on the market  
  • Ideally located 
  • Well secured -
  •  A real friendly feel   

Disadvantages  

  • Reduced number of places and conditions of access 
  • Minimum amenities  
  • Cramped  
  • Common living rules to be adhered to

 

4. Private student residences

  They offer a turnkey solution to students: apartments with every amenity with services, an excellent provision which costs quite a lot.   

Advantages

  • Well secured 
  • A real friendly feel  
  • Flexible conditions for access 
  • Availability 
  • Real comfort
  •  Many services 
  • Eligible for APL 

 Disadvantages  

  • Rent that is sometimes above the market level 
  • Consequent application fees 

5. Co-rentals

 Co-rentals are the dream properties for a lot of students. In actual fact, if this is an economic solution, it is not the easiest administratively and day-to-day.

  • Rent that is sometimes below the market level 
  • A real friendly feel 
  •  Access to more amenities   

Disadvantages  

  • A reduced choice of properties 
  • Complicated conditions for access 
  • A risk of bad cohabitation 

 6. A room in a private home

  Rarer and less requested in the student accommodation market, a room in a private home can, however, prove to be a good economic solution.

  • Rent below the market level 
  • Real comfort
  •  A certain friendly feel

Disadvantages 

  • A reduced choice of properties 
  • Sometimes strict living rules

 7. Student houses

  There are not many of them, and they are generally managed by associations or by clerics.

  • Well secured  

Disadvantages  

  • Not many available 
  • Strict rules 
  • Often reserved for females

 8. Young workers’ halls   

These residences are intended for apprentice students, or students on a work placement, as well as salaried students. A really good plan when you are in this situation.   

Advantages  

  • Rent below the market level 
  • A real friendly feel
  •  Well secured  

Disadvantages  

  • Not many available
  • Strict rules 
  • Often reserved for females
